My Journey

When I was first ordained as a deacon over thirty-five years ago, I received a Bible, a handshake, and a charge to serve tables What I did not receive was a roadmap.

I learned the ministry of a deacon the way most of us do-by doing. I visited the sick, delivered communion to the homebound, sat with grieving families, helped families in crisis, and tried to bridge the gap between the church and the communtiy. Along the way. I discovered that the deacon's work is not just volunteer work; it is profoundly spiritual. The work of the deacon is a sacred calling, rooted in Scripture and empowered by the Holy Spirit.

Over the years, I have served alongside deacons in multiple congregations, watched technology reshape how we care for people, and seen the deacon ministry evolve while attempting to remain anchored to God's Word. I have also noticed a recurring need: deacons need a resource that is both biblically sound and practically useful.

This handbook is my attempt to meet that need.

But I do not offer this as a finished work. I offer it as a foundation, a beginning. I have designed this handbook as a living document meant to grow, improve, and reflect the collective wisdom of deacons who are serving on the front lines of ministry today. This handbook is by deacons for deacons who serve God's people and love His word.
